ANNUAL WORK HOURS
A standard full-time schedule of 40 hours per week for 52 weeks equals 2,080 gross work hours per year. Use the calculator below to adjust that number for PTO, holidays, sick days, and other time off.
CALCULATOR
Enter your usual schedule and the days you expect not to work.
Days off are converted to hours using your average scheduled hours per workday. Enter only days you would otherwise have worked.
THE 2,080-HOUR RULE
The familiar 2,080-hour figure is a scheduling baseline, not a guarantee of how many hours someone actually works. It comes from a standard 40-hour week across 52 weeks.
If you take vacation, holidays, sick leave, unpaid leave, or other days off, your actual hours worked will be lower. Overtime or extra shifts can make the total higher.
COMMON SCHEDULES
| Hours per week | Gross hours per year | Average per month |
|---|---|---|
| 20 | 1,040 | 86.7 |
| 25 | 1,300 | 108.3 |
| 30 | 1,560 | 130.0 |
| 32 | 1,664 | 138.7 |
| 35 | 1,820 | 151.7 |
| 37.5 | 1,950 | 162.5 |
| 40 | 2,080 | 173.3 |
| 45 | 2,340 | 195.0 |
| 50 | 2,600 | 216.7 |
These figures use 52 weeks and do not subtract time off.
PTO & HOLIDAYS
For a five-day, 40-hour schedule, the average scheduled workday is eight hours. Every day off that replaces a scheduled workday therefore removes about eight hours from the number of hours actually worked.
| Example | Hours removed | Estimated hours worked |
|---|---|---|
| No time off | 0 | 2,080 |
| 10 days off | 80 | 2,000 |
| 15 days off | 120 | 1,960 |
| 20 days off | 160 | 1,920 |
| 25 days off | 200 | 1,880 |
| 30 days off | 240 | 1,840 |
Whether paid time off should be subtracted depends on what you are trying to measure. For hours actually worked, subtract days you do not work. For some compensation or payroll comparisons, paid leave may still count as paid scheduled time.
PAY CONVERSION
Annual work hours are often used to compare hourly wages with annual salaries. A simple full-time conversion uses 2,080 hours. For example, $25 per hour multiplied by 2,080 equals $52,000 in gross annual pay.
