HOW IT WORKS

How to calculate overtime pay

Overtime pay starts with your regular hourly wage and the overtime multiplier that applies to your situation. A common example is 1.5×, often called time and a half.

Hourly wage × overtime multiplier = overtime hourly rate

Once you know the overtime rate, multiply it by the number of overtime hours worked.

Overtime hourly rate × overtime hours = overtime pay

Example: $25 per hour with 5 overtime hours

If you earn $25 per hour and your overtime multiplier is 1.5×, your overtime rate is $37.50 per hour. Five overtime hours would produce an estimated $187.50 in overtime pay.

If you work the same five overtime hours every week for 52 weeks, that would equal an estimated $9,750 in annual overtime earnings before taxes and deductions.

TIME AND A HALF

What is time-and-a-half pay?

Time and a half means your overtime hourly rate is 150% of your regular hourly wage. In calculator terms, the multiplier is 1.5.

Regular hourly wage × 1.5 = time-and-a-half rate

For example, if your regular rate is $20 per hour, your estimated time-and-a-half rate is $30 per hour. If your regular rate is $30 per hour, the estimated rate is $45 per hour.

Use the Hourly to Salary Calculator if you also want to convert your regular hourly wage into weekly, monthly, and annual income.
