What is shift differential pay?

Shift differential is extra compensation an employer may offer for working particular schedules such as evenings, nights, weekends, or other less desirable shifts. It is commonly expressed as a percentage of base pay or as an extra dollar amount per hour.

Percentage premium per hour = Base hourly rate × Differential %
Flat premium per hour = Entered dollar premium

How to calculate night shift differential

For a percentage differential, multiply your base hourly rate by the differential percentage, then multiply that premium by the number of qualifying hours. Add the premium to base earnings to estimate total gross pay.

Example: $30/hour with a 15% night differential

A 15% differential on $30 per hour adds $4.50 per qualifying hour. For a 12-hour qualifying shift, the additional differential is $54, making the effective rate for those hours $34.50 per hour.

Percentage vs. flat-rate shift differential

A percentage premium increases as the base wage increases. A flat differential adds a fixed amount, such as $2.00 per hour, regardless of the base hourly wage.

Shift differential FAQ

Is shift differential the same as overtime?

No. Shift differential is a premium associated with certain shifts or schedules, while overtime generally relates to hours worked beyond an applicable threshold. Rules can vary.

How much is a 10% shift differential?

Multiply the base hourly rate by 10%. For example, 10% of $20 is $2, giving an effective rate of $22 for qualifying hours.

Can a shift differential be a flat dollar amount?

Yes. Some employers use a fixed hourly premium rather than a percentage. Select the flat-dollar option in this calculator.

Does this calculator include taxes?

No. Results are gross-pay estimates before taxes and deductions.
