Calculate holiday pay

This is a planning estimate. Holiday pay rules can depend on employer policy, contracts, state or local law, and other jurisdiction-specific requirements.

How to calculate holiday pay

If your employer pays a premium for working on a holiday, multiply your regular hourly rate by the holiday multiplier and then by the number of holiday hours worked.

Holiday work pay = Regular hourly rate × Holiday multiplier × Holiday hours worked

Example: time-and-a-half holiday pay

At $25 per hour with an 8-hour holiday shift paid at 1.5×, the holiday work rate is $37.50 per hour and gross holiday work pay is $300.

$25 × 1.5 × 8 hours = $300

Holiday premium vs. total holiday rate

A 1.5× rate includes the normal 1× base wage plus an additional 0.5× premium. At $25 per hour, that means $25 of base pay plus $12.50 of premium pay for each qualifying hour.

Holiday multiplierRate at $25/hour
1× regular rate$25.00/hour
1.5× time-and-a-half$37.50/hour
2× double time$50.00/hour

Paid holiday hours when you do not work

Some employers provide paid holiday hours even when an employee does not work. If your policy provides this benefit, enter those hours separately so the calculator can add them to the total holiday compensation.

U.S. federal-law note: the Fair Labor Standards Act does not generally require employers to pay for time not worked on holidays, and it does not require premium pay merely because work occurs on a holiday. Covered nonexempt employees may still be entitled to overtime when their total workweek hours trigger overtime requirements.

Holiday pay calculator FAQ

Is holiday pay always time-and-a-half?

No. Holiday premiums vary by employer policy, contract, and applicable law. Use the multiplier that actually applies to your situation.

How much is time-and-a-half on a holiday?

Multiply the regular hourly rate by 1.5. For example, $20 per hour becomes $30 per hour.

How much is double-time holiday pay?

Multiply the regular hourly rate by 2. For example, $20 per hour becomes $40 per hour.

Does federal law require holiday premium pay in the United States?

Generally, the FLSA does not require extra pay solely because an employee works on a holiday. Employer agreements and state or local rules may differ.

Does paid holiday time count as hours worked for federal overtime?

Under the FLSA, paid holiday time when no work is performed generally does not have to be counted as hours worked for overtime calculations.
